D4 & PvP: Classic PvP Modes/Battle Royale/Battlegrounds/Open World PvP.

Hey, Reddit! In the weeks leading up to BlizzCon, I can’t help but think about other aspects of D4 that haven’t caught the attention of the community or developers, namely PvP. We saw in the game trailer and learned at last year’s BlizzCon that there will be some sort of PvP zone in the open world of D4. But is that enough? Maybe, but I also think there is so much potential and opportunity (especially in Ladder seasons) for mini-PvP games and modes outside of the normal player experience.

Enter the Battle Royale, or as I prefer to call it Highlander because of the modern connotations of the old term. I assume you know the basics: X players start at the edges of the map and try to find and kill each other until only one is left. However, I want to introduce more Diablo into this mode and make it essentially PvPvE:

  • To begin with, choose a class and/or a prefabricated character (Fire Witch/Wolf Druid/WW Beard, etc;).
  • As you move around the map, you’ll come across treasure chests and minivans to battle. You get object and skill enhancements from them (with a few RNG elements here and there). At some point your path will cross that of another player and you will have to deal with that too;
  • Finally, when all other players have died, either by your hand or by monsters/falls, you can fight the final boss with the items and skill upgrades you chose along the way.

Here’s a quick overview. Why use predefined or brand new characters for the mode? Because I believe, and this was proven by the Arena PvP failure in D3, that the balance of PvP in Diablo games is extremely difficult. There’s so much unpredictable interaction between players that depends on equipment and skills that I don’t think it’s fair to expect a fair and balanced PvP game, at least not for the first game. You have to conclude that some skills need to be balanced differently for PvP, and I agree and would love to see that happen, but even with that in mind it’s a huge task for developers to find the right balance.

One of the most important elements for me is the interactivity of the maps. The maps should have a varied presentation, with monsters spawning and hazards to keep the experience fresh.

But I also think there should be a mode where you can do PvP with your PvE character, but I don’t think it can be considered a supported PvP mode if the balance isn’t right, so it could be a mode just for fun.

Of course, with a PvP mode like this introducing cosmetic purchases, Blizzard can provide D4 with an ongoing revenue stream outside of the box/expansion to support the game in the long run.

I mainly wanted to focus on the BR/Highlander mode for D4, but I’d like to know what you think about 2v2/3v3 arena modes as promised for D3, battlegrounds and duels as a form of PvP for the game.

  • Unlocking Neglected PVP Modes

If I had the motivation or time to become a full-fledged independent developer, my dream would be to make the neglected free / open source PVP modes of partially / primarily non-competitive games repeatable. Games where there are comments about balance or characteristics of competition . Well, the PVP is not the subject of this game.

  • Proposal: PvP flags and exclusive PvP merchants

I’m sure someone has already suggested something similar, but I thought I’d share my idea anyway. The current implementation of PvP rewards no one (other than the joy of making it harder for other players) unless both parties are willing to fight and/or enjoy. I often play solo and have been attacked many times….

  • PvP in the sense of PvP.

I’m already preparing the down quotes that will come from this post…. I’m surprised at how many people are willing to condemn PvP in adventure mode because they refuse to explore this aspect of the game. First, the workshop must be time-limited. They got it for…
