Size is always an important factor when it comes to choosing motherboards because you obviously want something that will fit inside your case!
In general, there are three sizes of motherboard: ATX, Micro ATX and Mini ITX. You can find these sizes in different brands such as Asus, Gigabyte and MSI.
NUMBER OF PORTS:
Number of Ports is also very important because you want to make sure that the motherboard and the case you choose have enough ports for all of your components! You’ll most likely need USB, Ethernet and audio ports in order to be able to connect everything together.
A lot of people think that form factor mainly effects looks but it actually has more implications than just making something look good! The three main types of motherboards are ATX, Micro-ATX and Mini ITX. Each one serves a different purpose which will help you determine which type of board will fit inside your rig case.
However, if you plan on building an enthusiast level PC then buying a full sized ATX motherboard might not be the best idea because chances are you won’t even need all of its ports and features!
For example, AMD’s X470 chipset has enough features to satisfy most users needs and since it is a mid-range chipset then buying a lower end motherboard that uses the same chipsets will serve your needs just as well.
Price is also something to keep in mind when choosing motherboards because prices can range from $50 to over $200 depending on what specifications and features it comes with!
You don’t HAVE to spend a lot of money if want an adequate motherboard for your PC build because there are boards such as MSI’s B450 Tomahawk which have almost all the features you could ask for without being overpriced!
However, if you’re someone who likes to upgrade your system every 6 months or so then it might be best for you to invest in a Z390 motherboard which are more expensive but will give you the most performance for your money.
This is definitely something that will appeal to people who want to get the most out of their hardware! Higher end motherboards have better overclocking capabilities because they have better power phases, components and overall stability.
For example, MSI’s MEG series of motherboards are known for having some of the highest overclocking capabilities on the market which is what makes them ideal for high-end builds.
However, if you do not plan on overclocking then mid range boards such as MSI’s B450s still have just as many customizable features that will give you just as much performance!
THE NUMBER OF RAM PORTS:
This is something that not a lot of people think about when they are building their rigs but it’s still important to consider because you do not want to be limited when choosing your RAM!
For example, MSI’s Z390 Gaming Plus has three RAM slots which is the minimum you need for dual channel (which in most cases will give you better performance than single channel).
You might think that since most boards have at least 2 ram slots then why would this even matter? Well, if you plan on buying large amounts of RAM such as 16GB or 32GB then having more than two memory slots would be ideal and allow you to expand.
TOTAL USB PORTS:
This is another feature that not a lot of people prioritize when choosing their motherboards but it’s still important!
Having too little USB ports can be an inconvenience because you might have to leave out some of your components in order to use other ones.
For example, Gigabyte’s B450 Aorus Pro only has 3 USB ports which means I wouldn’t be able to connect both my HDD and my SSD at the same time without using a USB hub.
However, MSI’s B450 Tomahawk comes with 6 usb ports which gives me much more flexibility when configuring my rig!

ASUS ROG Crosshair VII Hero or MSI MEG X570 ACE. If you aren’t overclocking then the B450 Tomahawk is also a good option!
What motherboard brands are best?
My personal favorite brand of motherboards would definitely be MSI because they have always had great customer service and their boards last for years before starting to malfunction.
However, ASUS, Gigabyte and Asrock are also very solid choices when it comes to building your PC.

This is entirely up to preference but I personally like my components to match so if you see a theme that you like in your build then try to find the closest equivalent in terms of with your motherboard’s color scheme!
What’s the best motherboard for gaming?
This actually depends on what your other components are going to be because you can’t really tell which motherboards are good for gaming until you know how much power it needs and other important specs!
However, I would recommend spending a bit more money on a Z370 or Z390 motherboard depending on whether you want to overclock or not.
How long do Motherboards last?
This is something I definitely cannot answer as every board is different! Some people have been using their boards for years without any issues while others have had problems within months of buying it.
